Under new head coach Jeff Eloi, the Somerset Canyons basketball team got off to a fresh start this season, hoping to improve on their 10–14 record from the previous year. They took on the formidable Riviera Beach Prep Gladiators in their season opener. Victor Diaz's explosive shooting helped the Cougars get off to a fast start. Throughout the game, Diaz scored frequently, including a string of uncontested three-pointers that kept Somerset ahead. Avante Footman Jr. also made significant contributions, energizing the crowd with a and-one play and a three-pointer.
Nehemiah Clarke Jr. and Jayden Baptista were noticeable on defense, preventing shots and reducing the Gladiators' scoring chances. Hershell Reynolds, the sophomore sensation for Riviera Beach Prep, was almost unstoppable, scoring a career-high 40 points despite their defensive efforts. However, the Cougars' well-balanced approach was too strong for his offensive burst. With 26 points, Victor Diaz led Somerset and maintained his team's lead throughout evening.
The Cougars’ strong start earned them a 1-0 record, while the Gladiators fell to 0-1. Somerset will look to continue their momentum as they travel to face Cardinal Newman on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Riviera Beach Prep will aim for their first win when they take on Jupiter Christian tomorrow night.
